Joaquin Navarro-Valls would probably have made a very good diplomat. He speaks several languages and has a commanding presence and a sharp mind. And while some of his work ls diplomatic-he traveled to Cuba before the Pope to negotiate television coverage of the trip with Castro, for example – Navarro earns his living by trying to explain the Vatican to the world. Navarro, sixty-five, Spanish and a member of Opus Dei, has been spokesman for Pope John Paul il since 1984. A physidan by training. he worked as the Rome correspondentfor thedaily ABC before taking thejob in the Vatican.
How would you describe your job?
“Providing information on the activities of the Pope and the Holy See in such a way that public oplnion can understand their context and their religious and human objectives.
